In early July I took my son & daughter (Corey & Katie), and my nephew and his soon-to-be-bride (Charles & Devon) out for a little smallmouth bass fishing trip on the Snake River. We started above Asotin and fished our way down below Chief Timothy Park. At the end of the day the 2 girls out fished the 3 guys - by a healthy margin. The picture is of Devon's second bass of the day (and ever), which she quickly released. Like most fishing trips the catching could have been better, but being able to fish together with the kids and their cousins was over the top!

One of many great Coho captured from my Weldcraft 201. It is proving to be the best offshore fishing platform in its class. I am constantly
asked about it at dockside by the salmon and ground fishing types who
fish Neah Bay.

NSIA Salmon Challenge Event

Team Weldcraft made the journey to Astoria, Oregon to compete in the NSIA Buoy 10 Salmon Challenge at the end of August. Thanks to Weldcraft dealer Sigler's Marine in Portland, a brand new 240 Cuddy King was made available to fish the event. The day started out slow but persistence paid off. We boated about 10 coho salmon but most were small or natives that had to be released. Only 4 keepers at the end of the day. We certainly weren't contenders in the tournament, but great fun was had by all.

Buoy 10 Part 1 (First Fish)

An epic week at Buoy 10 in Astoria the last week of August. But it didn't start out the way it ended. This small Jack was one of the first victims... of a sea lion. It took a dive under the boat, got really heavy for bit, then came up quite easily. Since we couldn't confirm it was a keeper without the fin, we set it free.
Part 2 next.

Buoy 10 part 3

Anyone who has fished with me knows I’m one of those superstitious anglers. I’ve got more than a few mandatory “can’t dos” on my boat. And yes, bananas are one of them. However, I think I’m going to have to lay off the no banana’s rule. With more than 30 fish in one day, and the first time anyone ever had an entire bunch of bananas on board, I’m willing to write the myth off for good. But…you still can’t fish on my boat if you have any spare change in your pocket! It goes into the top of my tackle box or you go overboard. That one has been proven effective countless times.

Buoy 10 pt. 2

Following the sea lion encounter, things got crazy. We fished four rods and could barely keep all four in the water. It was just stupid fishing. Well over 30 landed, including my first ever QUAD. All four rods hooked up, all four fish landed. It was without doubt the best day of fishing I've ever had in the lower 48. And of course, the CV 206 gets even more praise for being the perfect Buoy 10 boat. If you like to fish open boats, but want something that doesn't beat you to death in rough water you owe it to yourself to take a look at the CV 206.

Part 3 next.

Ladies First

My girlfriend and I had a nice quiet five days planned for the beach last week. I took the Weldcraft CV 206 down with hopes of being able to fish with some buddies on the weekend if the conditions allowed. The night we arrived we walked to the beach and I have never seen the ocean so flat. The waves on the beach were barely 1 foot tall. I told her that if the ocean looked like that in the morning she was spending her first day at sea with me. (For safety sake, I won’t go out alone.) She’d never been fishing before and never had been in the ocean. I’m not so sure she was excited, but she was willing. The next day it was just as flat, so we loaded the boat, grabbed bait and crossed the bar at Tillamook with no problem. Five miles out we dropped the first line and it got bit on the way down. Her rod was only out 2 minutes before it got bit. An epic day! All told we landed 5 or 6 and lost another 8 coho. Not bad for her first ocean adventure. As usual, the Weldcraft CV 206 performed flawlessly. I love the prop on this boat but looking forward to putting the pump back on for some fall river fishing on the Rogue river.

26 day Alaska trip

The glacier country of the Bradfield Canal has mostly "unsurveyed" bays and coast line. The water is glacial murky, so you need a tough boat in case you hit a rock while finding anchorage. I haven't hit one yet, but it's just a matter of time. But I'm more worried about my props than a Weldcraft!

And when it's time to outrun the approaching notarious South Easternly storm, the Weldcraft hull allows me to get 2.2 mpg at 26 mph for that 100 mile run. The 175 gal. gas tank is a real security blanket!

Fishing Huntington Lake again

Camped and fished with 8 of the Grandkids for 9 days at Huntington Lake Ca. My Weldcraft is so stable and smooth even the littlest ones had a great time. Even dodging the sailboats and pushing against the wind I only used about 12 gallons of fuel all week thats with the 75 going out and then trolling with the 8 I have had several boats and this is by far the best of the bunch.

Weldcraft-tough enough for Alaska

366 miles in 31 days. The Chickadee went all the way around Revillagigedo Island, exploring most of the coves and bays in Misty Fiords Nat. Mon. and Behm Canal. 3000' cliffs and waterfalls everywhere.

I met a guide(I was the second person he'd seen in 30 days) who said that I had the perfectly designed/built/equipped boat for Alaska.

Even at 25mph in rough seas, the boat doesn't slam down and the suspension seats really work.

Great Days

It wasn't the best year I've had for Springers on the Columbia, but certainly a great time had by all.
We fished 6 days on the Columbia, mostly in the gut of the heavy traffic around I-5. Most days were one or two fish. The day pictured in the photo was our best with three keepers and one released and three others that didn't stick. All were caught on herring.
The following day, (photo posted in the main photo gallery) we had the pleasure of fishing with some of the fine folks that built my boat. The guys at Weldcraft couldn't wait till May for the fish to show up in their backyard on the Snake and Clearwater, so they came down to Portland to fish with the masses. We were able to coax one fish into the boat, but the flows had come up it was tough fishing. I was thankful they were able to return to Clarkston with some fine Chinook for dinner.
This was the first time I'd run the prop on this boat. I've had a pump on it since I bought it. The prop on this hull is incredible. Of course, with 200 HP there's more power than you could ever want. I haven't hit full throttle yet, but it should easily do 50MPH...if one is inclined to hold on to a tiller handle at that speed. Not sure I'll ever find out.

Weekend in the Weldcraft

Living on Whidbey, we enjoy taking our Weldcraft Maverick 18-6 on weekend trips to the Olympic Pen. to see Grandma and Grandpa.
Here, our family of four (+ luggage!) leave the Old Alcohol Plant Marina in Port Hadlock for a boatride on home to Whidbey...

Always keeping an eye on the sounder for baitfish of course!

Kayaks and Mavericks

Last year my neighbor and I decided we would build devices to haul our kayaks into the San Juan Islands instead of taking them on the ferry which costs a lot of money. I slung our two kayaks on the sides of my Weldcraft and off we went through Deception Pass and across the strait to Lopez Island. I was a great day of paddling and a great boat ride in the Maverick. Next summer we will venture further into the islands and spend more time camping and kayaking now that we have found a more fun and more cost efficient way to travel thanks to my Weldcraft.

It may be no surprise, but here's yet another photo of an extremely proud owner of what could be arguably some of the best vessels on the water...period. For years I have dreamt of owning a Weldcraft made just for me. After placing the order in September 2008, I just received my customized brand new Mav in January 2009, and boy does she like to play in the water!
Weldcraft offers a wide array of different fishing platforms to fit everyone's needs. Oh...and did I mention Fun! How do I spell 'recreation'? How about 'WELDCRAFT'. Not only are they fishing machines, but they offer every opportunity to have a blast at every turn of the wheel and push of the throttle. They make getting there...more than half the fun! And the worst days of fishing can be some of the best days of boating thanks to their versatility. I've had my Mav out in some fairly good chop and it is absolutely the best riding and handling boat I've been in. Not only did we stay dry despite the intense spray, but I was able to stay on plane at slower speeds and ride through the roughest parts of the waves thanks to the superior hull design.
I enjoy fishing all over Washington State, fishing for multiple species from walleye, trophy trout, bass, silvers, and salmon to steelhead. I love it all! Coupled with Yamaha, this is the boat to get us there and back.
I would like to personally thank RMG for crafting one of the finest boats on the market. Your processes, techniques and attention to detail are unsurpassed. I would also like to give a shout-out to Valley Marine in Yakima, WA for going above and beyond in customer service. From ordering to delivering, they do it right!

the good life

Weldcraft boats are the best, I've owned a few aluminum boats and this was a dream that I had for 5 years. Life gave me a BEAUTIFUL wife and the ability to fish and own a boat of this magnitude and I will never look back ,life is good. These boats are the finest that you can run and they fish easy. I own a tackle company and this is the boat that best suited my style of life Including; salmon, trout, walleye, bass, and to never forget the incredible ling cod, and scuba diving in the puget sound. The family and I go Roche Harbor for lunch on the whim and the fuel consumption with the boat is nothing, thanks to the reverse chine it also gives us a great ride even in bad water. RMG builds a killer boat and my next boat will be 260 Maverick DV, "Remeber at the end of rod or the sights of your gun is; a meal, a smile, and a memory, live the good life. Lindsay's first springer

Lindsay is my middle daughter and fishing partner. Lindsay is nine years old. She is always willing to get on the boat, and never says no when asked. Some of her favorite time is hanging out on the boat waiting for the "Bite". This is a piture of her first Springer that she caught on her own. She has caught other salmon but this one really worked her. Just check out the grin!!!!

My First Jet Boat

I grew up in Idaho and my dad had an old weldcraft when I was a kid and I always loved being out on the river. I have been away in the Marine Corps for 6 years and recently got stationed at OSU to get my degree and go back to the fleet as an officer. My Wife and I wanted to have something adventurous and relaxing to enjoy when we had breaks from school so last year we decided to buy a jet boat. We bought this beautiful 1988 20' Weldcraft and used it almost every weekend this summer. The greatest thing about it is we live about 2 miles from a boat launch on the Willamette River and when we have a rough day we load up the dogs and head for the river. It is truely amazing on a summers evening to see the sun setting and the reflections on the water, the sounds of the wildlife and the wind blowing through your hair, it can only be experienced in a jetboat. We are rebuilding and modernizing the boat a little bit this winter so more pictures to follow soon.
Thanks Weldcraft

Max's First Chinook

Max (age 7) and his Dad and Grandpa went out after work to fish Puget Sound's Summer Chinook season. This was Max's first Chinook (over 25 pounds) and was 1 of 3 landed that evening!

The Maverick is a pleasure to operate and a fantastic fishing platform!

Destination Neah Bay

There is nothing accidental about a trip to Neah Bay. You don't pass through there on your way to somewhere else. Neah Bay is an end-of-the-road destination at the Northwest tip of Washington State, just a few miles from Cape Flattery where the Straits of Juan de Fuca touch the Pacific Ocean. For an avid, experienced fisherman, Neah can be the best place on earth or the most frustrating experience imaginable. It all comes down to wind, weather, fog and tides. When the weather gods are smiling and the tidal exchanges are modest, Neah Bay can produce enviable numbers of Coho.
The Maverick 201 is an ideal fishing platform for the conditions there. Armed with a Yamaha 150 and a Yamaha 8, the 201 puts you on the fish with ease. Neah is best from early July through August. It is not unusual to find schools of aggressive 10 pounders who will hit just about anything you throw at them. Most of the Coho we capture are feeding near the surface. They fight long and hard, often going airborne in the process. The Coho gain a pound a week during their feeding frenzies in the ocean. Near the end of August, it is not unusual to net an occasional 15 to 20 pounder.

Greatest place on Earth

I go everywhere with my Weldcraft CV206, but without question, the Rogue River in Southern Oregon is always first on my list. The river from the mouth at Gold Beach up to Agness, about 25 miles, is some of the most beautiful jet boat country you’ll ever find. Between about river mile 16 and 22, are the best beaches, incredible canyons and great fishing for fall salmon, steelhead and trout. In September is best time, as the weather is still hot.
Running the Rogue in a jet is not for the faint of heart. This is a very shallow river with countless gravel riffles and tailouts that are less than a foot deep. You absolutely have to know the river well to run it safely. The nice part about running the river is that you know there is always a safe route because they run the big jet boat tours on the same stretch. If a 40 foot jet boat with 50 people can make it through, anybody can. You just have to know the right channel. Sometimes, but not always, the jet boat tour companies put markers in the river to guide you.
The camping is second to none. Big, sandy beaches you can have all to yourself. The fishing can be great in the last two weeks of September, but it takes a good rain to really get the fish moving up from the bay. Trolling Luhr Jensen Kwikfish or bouncing eggs are the primary techniques. This is a big fish river…we’ve caught several 40-pounders.
Running the river above Agness is not recommend. There is a massive boulder garden called Shasta Costa about two miles up. Looking at it you’ll swear there is no way to get through it…but there is. Even the tour boats do it…but don’t try it.
Best place to launch is either at Agness and go down, or Quasatanna and go up.
If you post with questions, I’ll be happy to answer them.
